It also would depend on what subject you are taking. Shakespeare is dead - so it doesn't really matter if you get your English degree from Harvard or a relative no-name university.
Harvard Law or Harvard Med might be a different matter where hiring agencies probably do care because it's a kind of advertisement to customers/patients. Universities often have specialty areas but if you're not taking the specialty then the other subjects may or may not be better than other cheaper mainstream schools.
A lot of very smart people may simply not be able to afford to go to very expensive schools. And I understand that in the US you can buy your way into elite universities - with zero merits. Provided your daddy was rich and bought the school a Library then his dumbass kid gets a seat.
Indeed, some people actually hire people to do their SATs to get them into some universities. And as we know, a few film stars recently paid off teachers to get their kids into prestigious universities. Sure they got caught but as with most crimes - the percentage of people who get caught relative to those who do not is very low.
