Being procative instead of reactive

portion control

It's very hard in the USA because when I went to a mall in Vegas they were charging $4.50 for a fresh fruit juice. Loads of flavours some healthy like cucumber so not too sugary. But then for $5.00 you could get the large which was like 3 times larger - it was like 1.5l drink versus 500ml

You'd be crazy NOT to spend the extra $0.50.

When I first came to Hong Kong I was 257lbs. No car - walking 7,000 to 14,000 steps a day and when I dod buy something unhealthy the large size cup is the equivalent to a small in the west. Now I weigh in at 197lbs.

Plus all the buffets in the US - man some of them are good but you always tend to overeat but $9.99 or whatever is hard to pass up. Then it becomes a habit - there are articles noting that some of the combinations of fat, oil and sugar are as addictive as crack.

Parenting - did your parents control what you ate well or were they too busy and always cooking fast meals for you. Some people are more self-disciplined and don't get addicted to things as easily. I have an incredibly sweet tooth. But the Chinese I meet typically don't like sweets. Krispy Kreme for instance failed here. But many think they make the best donuts ever. In South Korea - all skinny folks LOVE DunkinDonuts - there is practically one on every block. But a huge walking country so they can burn those donuts off.

America and Canada are built for cars - so people walk from their door to their car and from the car to their office.

My two favourite sports are hockey and baseball - but as you get older you play less often. The gym is boring as F...

I know it's quite a struggle for these large people because they also feel embarrassed going to the gym - if they are overweight they feel self-conscious with people snickering at them so they just don't go - they feel depressed and then food gives them a big dopamine hit which quite literally makes them feel happy and relieves the depression but then it adds more weight.

It also doesn't help when dopey governments claim ketchup is a vegetable and I guess fries are a potato so they're vegetables too. My mom would pack me a lunch to school but the school cafeteria had those fat-cut fries with the tastiest gravy ever. My mom's packed celery and tomatoes couldn't compete so she either gave them away or ate them AND the fries.

You see what the kids in Japan eat everyday for their school lunch programs and it's no wonder they are all thin and healthy while us westerners are chubby.

Indeed, living in Hong Kong for a decade - when I go back to the west - even the women who are supposedly thin and healthy appear kind of chubby to me now.

With obesity pressuring the health systems so much maybe moving to a Japanese-style system where kids are drinking a gallon of Coca-Cola and 4 cholate bars and Slurpees every day - this might make more sense and teach lifelong good eating habits.

The West might solve so many damn problems just by being proactive rather than giving 7-year-olds total freedom to do whatever they like and say no you are eating this healthy food and not a pack of smarties for dinner.

What also impressed me is that the kids clean up the school out of a sense of responsibility that the school is an extension of their home. Fat chance in the west where "it's the janitor's job" and the kids can be pigs. Jeez.

No tubby kids.
