My take on this is a bit different, may not be correct... Tesla etc., introduction made perfect sense to me. Without charging infrastructure, only the wealthy will buy, which in turn fuels the EV companies, advances etc.
Performance, it basically comes for free. Electric motors have an enormous amount of torque and the batteries don't suffer from the maladies of lead acid batteries with non linear discharge rates. In other words, to provide range, you get performance. Regarding number of motors, the advantages are simplicity of regenerative braking and weight distribution.
