RE: A Christmas Carol

Each version has brought something or extended certain parts of the book. Directors and screenwriters make choices to keep or delete certain things for pacing.

I didn't dislike the 1938 version - if that one came on TV or the George C Scott or Patrick Stewart or even Scrooged - I'd probably watch it. There was a female one and one by the Muppets and a WKRP episode if we start getting into TV shows.

For me, Sims embodied the character the best. The colourized version was awful - stick to black and white for this one.

I don't begrudge special effects lacking in the past - after all, I am a fan of Classic Doctor Who which makes classic Star Trek effects look like a modern blockbuster.

My issues with some older films usually center around awkward acting styles that are not believable by today's standards nor were they really back then. And the cinematography for cinematography's sake - let's make this lighting and shot look cool because it's never been done before. Ie; shots that were used for the sake of the shot and not to carry the dialogue or story or theme or message (the important things) forward.

Critics in most avenues give a lot of credit to things that came first and heap praise on their ingenuity for creating some dolly shot (or creating the dolly) and that's fine as film history goes but it doesn't mean the finished work is superior to a modern effort that has even better technology, acting elements etc.

I don't give extra credit because something is first but what is best. So in the case of a Christmas Carol 1938 or 1951, I don't think the modern ones are better. I find them to be lesser. Even though I get why people like Scrooged - and I like Bill Murray and Carol Kane - I always found it lacked the heart of the novel and was overly meanspirited.
