There are good unions and bad unions and good bosses and bad bosses. The reason a union is formed is due to bad bosses.
I worked at the ONLY Steel Foundry in Canada that was NOT a union shop. Why no union? Because they paid more than the competition - they followed the law, they followed most protocols of unions but they retained the ability to fire "bad employees"
People were happy at their job. Chinese competition eventually killed them and Bill Clinton's Nafta is largely to blame for most western economic ills. As well as Clinton's ending Glass-Steagall. Yes, a liberal can criticize libeals. Albeit I always felt he was a DINO.
An example of why unions are needed (or some sort of worker protection that does not require always going to the courts and waiting years to get things fixed.

Unions have protected lazy employees but then management has given golden parachutes to horribly incompetent executives. I don't mind if you complain about a union protecting a worthless lazy git but do you also note that executives have run successful companies into the ground because instead of reinvesting they take money from pension plans and choose to make money by running the company and people's livelihoods into the abyss (see Twinkies).
"But in today's post-Reagan, Bain-model American capitalism, there's never any risk for the CEO class. Instead, all the risk is borne by the workers."
This is a true statement - The CEO always gets his/her golden parachute REGARDLESS how the company is performing. You want a bad employee fired and to get his ass thrown out into the street - fair enough - so di I - so why don't you say the same for the executives and CEO and owner of the company?
