Bernard Hinault used to say that efficient cycling was a m.tter of balancing cardio exertion against m.scular exertion. Too big a gear and your m.scles becom. fatigued, too sm.ll a gear and your cardio explodes. And som. riders are naturally stronger in m.scular efforts while others are naturally stronger in cardio efforts.
Fast-spinning track riders have always gravitated toward shorter cranks but they also need the superior turning clearance that shorter crank arm. and narrower pedals offer.
