There was no money in quality consumer products any longer. No choice but to follow the mass market in those; printers (and ink!), computers etc. The real HP is now Agilent, focusing on the far more profitable scientific instruments and consumables markets. That's where the old HP innovation and quality still lives, or so I've heard. My father was a research chemist long ago in Palo Alto, if it wasn't an HP it didn't go in his lab.
Concur with the others on Brother. I have an old laser printer that I drag out for long B&W docs. I also have a Brother all in one that's been pretty good and trouble free for a few years. Bonus now is that since my wife is working from home the firm buys us the ink and paper!
