RE: What's killing "the little guy"...

I don't believe that the OBD packages are that expensive, unless you buy the premium package for all manufacturers. Years ago I bought a disassembled Prius, the previous owner appears to have been attempting a reverse engineering and upgrade. With it were 3 OBD scanners, two were basic, but open source. The third was Autoenginuity, which is quite good. From Autoenginuity I purchased enhanced packages for Toyota and BMW, it has been a while but I believe they were $150 each. With these packages it makes today's cars very easy to diagnose.

Key FOB's, what you wrote is correct for many manufacturers. Unfortunately it is not correct for BMW, which requires the blank to be purchased from them. Dealer price is around $240.
