RE: But I haven't bought any Twix, even though I posted about their commercial

Advertising works on a subconscious level. It's not that you will rush out and buy Twix - but let's say you are a person who happens to agree with the messaging in the commercial - 2 years later you're hungry at an airport or train station and you put your money into the machine - your subconscious brain has some ingrained "good feelings" about that Twix commercial and you decided to select G19 the Twix bar over say your usual Mars selection.

If the Twix tastes good - then the taste is reinforcing the subconscious that hey this Twix is great. They're not out to get everyone, they just need to get enough people - emotions along with chocolate (dopamine) is enough.

20 years ago I was on a forum and I said - gee I like this Audio Note more than my B&W speakers and every other brand I auditioned for the prior 10 years. People who never auditioned any of it were telling me I was a shill and there would be pages of arguments (like forum record-setting hits arguments). People would yell at me that "I will never audition that brand just because of you (meaning me)." So I felt bad about those comments and e-mailed both the owner of Audio Note and the owner of the dealer I went to. Soundhounds was my dealer and they said - "no problem" - why? because all advertising is good advertising. They had dozens and dozens of people come to the shop to audition the products (and other products) from people who may never have gone to the shop! People who would have gone to a chain store liked Future Shop or Best Buy.

Some of those people agreed with me and bought while others may have bought something else. Either way - it got butts into the seats at Soundhounds. Since Peter Q doesn't pay for advertising other than to demonstrate it in person at shows - he wants people to listen to the gear not read about it. So if butts are in the seats (even hostile butts) it's better than no butts.

When I taught Business and Marketing in High School - one of the interesting forms was the no-marketing marketing - back when Rolls Royce was considered the best of the best in cars (didn't matter if it was true) - they got that reputation for their snobby persona. "We don't need to advertise like the also-ran companies because if you want the BEST - you'll find us." Coupled with the high prices.

It's subconscious - it's like films - if they have to advertise the absolute crap out of it - it's probably not worth seeing.

And some advertisers shoot themselves in the foot. I would see some advert from Chrysler or Ford - they spent 80% of the commercial comparing their slop to Honda - our car has 50lbs more towing capacity or a slightly bigger trunk. The problem is by the end of the commercial my dad and I looked at each other and said - Ford is basically telling you that the best car in this class is the Honda and their futile attempt to compete.

A few years ago Gillette made a commercial about men should try and be better (basically not beat your wife) - there is an American guy on this island who went ape shit over the "feminism" advertising - buddy it's a commercial calm down!

I am actually surprised - probably like you - that any company or actor or singer would go anywhere near politics or religion. That's why forums like this have policies on them because you alienate half the people/audience.

Both sides "cancel culture" - the Dixie Chicks made a comment and the right-wing fan base basically ended their career in music (they've had a small comeback but a very small one) and the left may not be going to an Eric Clapton concert again.

Interestingly some personalities seem to be able to go through unscathed like Clint Eastwood and Kelsey Grammar and Barbara Streisand who is ultra-liberal but the righties apparently still love her.

But this ties into corporations because they're making the money - so I am surprised when companies like AT&T go hard right-wing or Gilette supports WOKE causes. Perhaps they have done their research on their buyers and given the lack of shavers on January 6th - perhaps they figure their buyers who shave and work in offices in cities are liberals so let's play to our base. :-)
