RE: Nice...

I'm with you right up to the oregano, fennel and tarragon.

I got nothing against oregano at all, but I like a bit of thyme rather than the oregano in split pea. I also add a couple of finely sliced leeks. They cook down to nothing and add a subtle onion background and give the broth some body.

Tarragon always had a kind of licorice flavor to me, and I don't care for licorice. Fennel is fine with me as long as its in pork sausage. I'll have to give the rye grains a try. I like rye, but always default to barley in soups.
