RE: Solar Panels Going Up Today

Payback might be quicker than you think. When I did the grid tie, panels were well over $2.00 a watt, but with the tax credit, payback was a bit over 6 years.

You sure made a good choice not going with leasing or the financing they offer. A few years after we did our grid tie, my wife's sister was interested and passed along a financing contract she was offered. I had trouble understanding what they were doing, so I put it into a spreadsheet and took it out 20 years. At about 8 years out, it became very favorable for the company. I was curious and looked at some of the other options, that gave the tax credit to the company. These were even worse, the company got an initial bump, and again 7 - 9 years out became extremely favorable to the company.

Small scale DYI for experimenting does make sense, in my case I had panels in place for the pool, and the extra equipment left over so I went with a 6KWh lithium battery. I rarely cool or heat office or garage in the evenings so I may be able to get along with minimal storage. It is so weather dependent, it will be a while before I find out where I am regarding storage.

I have been fooling around with the chip RMS converter today, there is a wrinkle, the filtering cap they recommend that also reduces DC offset, makes the response slower than doing it with a Raspberry Pi. I'm still experimenting, fooling with it, hoping the DC offset is predictable and I can reduce the cap and factor in the offset.
