I did some construction and added some current solar equipment, which left me with extra panels and inverters which got me interested in doing standalone separate from grid tie system. So you are correct, in this configuration, it does require a standalone inverter for the grid tie inverters to sync with. But the backfeed detection problem is widespread, from people that have both wind and solar generators to people that use backup generators.
Regarding net metering, here the utility only pays us a few cents per KWH over production, so it is more economical to use it, especially if it is in some fashion storing the energy. Some rooms have significant thermal mass, so just over cooling or heating is a simple solution.
You mentioned monitoring isn't something you look at every day. I agree, but found something interesting. When I first did this, I also had a DC system to run pool recirculating pump. I could hear the difference in RPM, what was interesting was the affect of clouds. It was how much they varied in how much they blocked usable energy. Some days that looked pretty much the same to me cloud wise blocked much more or less energy than others. Another helpful thing is that I currently have four separate arrays, each differently angled and aligned. All the panels are REC, so I have been able to get a pretty good idea how much difference placement makes. And it is surprising how quickly production ramps up and down, before the cost came down on panels, it is apparent that tracking arrays significantly boosted output.
We have a very energy inefficient house, so the grid tie has saved us a lot of money, but really most of this is just interesting to me. The standalone system isn't about payback, just something to play with.
