This is the UNINTEDED consequence of the 12th amendment.
If we were still operating under the original system, no political party would allow a 'suspected' person to be elected for fear that the 2nd vote getter in the electoral college would be from the OTHER party.
Of course, this was made apparent by the 25th amendment, the succession provision. Ratified in 1967.
Of course, in the first several decades of the US? More than 2 parties. So you had a healthy mix of candidates and possibilities.
Prior to the 25th amendment? It seems clear that in a few cases, the Presidents Wife in effect took over dor an incapacitated or enfeebled spouse.
