I have a truing stand and sometimes it still doesn't help.
You probably know that re-truing the back wheel can still be tricky since it's dished - tighter spokes on the drive side than on the opposite. Once the rim is bent, especially the lighter aluminum ones, it's can be difficult if not impossible to get it true since the replacement spoke will either be tighter or looser than all the other spokes on the same side. You may get it true from side-to-side, but it won't be round and will have a hop in it! For best results, you also need a tensiometer.
I would never ride on a rim with a broken spoke for an extended period if I didn't have to for fear of denting a rim.
$10 is a bargain these days for someone that knows what they're doing. There are very competent bike shops that don't really do a good job truing wheels - it's an art.
