It seems one of the few things Cleveland is proud of is an art-deco style bridge across the Cuyahoga river. There are two stone or cast concrete "guardians" standing at the entrance to the bridge. Seems these "guardians" are quite locally famous. Maybe more so than the "blue jackets" of Columbus - go figure.
Anyway, rather than a brand of condoms, it seems the team name Guardians is lifted from the bridge "guardians".
