So far, we're not seeing deaths due to vaccinated old folks. Most of the unvaccinated victims are young and building herd immunity. Surely, it's better for them to take the shot, but their consequences are magnitudes better than a typical 75 year old. It's their choice. We just have to see how far the wave goes. It may well peter out soon with fewer than feared deaths.
As to 'red' states, I just read that NY had less than 40% vaccination rates in Trenton, I believe, which is largely Hispanic and Black which may explain differentials in the South. Of course, many of those minorities may also have herd immunity due to their close quarters over the last nearly 2 years.
