I knew a guy in college circa 1978 that lived in an old Chevy ambulance. As I recall, it was based on an Impala station wagon.
He was a student and bought a parking pass to one of the parking lots close to one of men's dorms. He always had a place to park/sleep, and he used the showers and bathrooms in the men's dorm.
He did that for a couple of semesters, but had to find another spot during summer. He eventually wormed his way into some girl's apartment and stayed with her.
