You're doing the right thing. By far, email is the biggest risk. Clicking on attachments is the easiest way to get hosed.Next, is phishing where they fake an email from what you think is a safe source like Amazon where they'll tell you to change your password immediately. But, the actual link isn't actually Amazon or your bank or whatever, it might be close, but no cigar.
Then, you have downloads that are free that may have garbage added along with some little utility. If your free download is asking if you want to install this and that, it's best to quit as it's likely you'll be getting junk whether you asked or not.
Lastly, you hit a site that claims you're infected and download this right away. Kill your browser because these won't let you leave the page.
Still, to be safe, backups are critical and you should have more than one backup.
