Have heard it said that you should only take an Amtrak if you really absolutely don't have to arrive at your destination at anything approaching a time certain.

Back in the early '90's, my sister and sister-In-law thought it would be fun to come visit wife and me on Amtrak from St. Louis to Dallas. The train was over three hours late arriving. On the return, the Amtrak folks at the station told us the train wouldn't be departing that day, and weren't even sure it'd leave the next day. On our way back to the house, we swung by DFW airport and they rented a car. They then spent one more night with us and drove back to St. Louis the next morning. They'd made it all the way to St. Louis, dropped off the rental, and home before that train made it to StL.

Sad, because I can remember what the trains were like back in the early sixties. Rode the Santa Fe Chief from StL to Albuquerque a few times to visit mom's family in New Mexico when I was a sprout.
