Been there, done that....

We traveled Europe on ferries and trains. Get a berth on either and wake up in the morning where you want to go and save a hotel stay. The funnist time was crossing from Italy at Trieste to Croatia. We got woke up by 3 customs agents or police and gave them our passports and they asked us something. We asked if the spoke English and they'd say it again or another of them would ask us in another language. It went on several times before they threw their hands up and gave us the stupid American look.

High speed trains are great. Paris to Cannes on the train was cheap and left you closer in town than flying. The difference is that European cities have subways and an old downtown where people live and the branches all fit into a central hub. The East Coast had that sort of infrastructure.

In San Diego County, everything is spread out everywhere in the suburbs without any real hub. The coaster doesn't connect with the Amtrak nor do the lines in LA connect with Grand Central Station or the airport. It can be done, but it would take decades. After billions on a high speed rail from San Diego to San Francisco, they've basically done some work on a small section from nowhere to nowhere that connects to nothing.

European countries are also smaller making rail faster than flying a few hundred miles.

How much would it cost to build a coast to coast high speed railroad? How many would use it?
