California looking to charge cars by miles driven....

Hybrids get too much mileage per gallon and EVs aren't paying a dime for road maintenance.

My truck gets on average 15mpg which equates to $10.50 of gas tax for 300 miles. My wife's Prius gets 50mpg or $3.12 in gas tax for the same miles. A nickel a mile amounts to $15 for a 300 mile trip. I'll bet that the gas tax won't go away either. And of course, all the money won't go into roads and bridges.

EVs have been getting a pass, so something has to change, but a nickel a mile sounds awfully expensive.

Sick of the gas tax?

What about a tax on every mile you drive?

A new bill going through Sacramento would tax drivers for every mile they are on the road.

The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon could be replaced with a "miles driven fee" of $0.05 cents or so per mile driven, under state legislation proposed by a Bay Area lawmaker.
