The rest of the world is going EV. The list of manufacturers committed to EV only production is growing weekly.
Manufacturers have to be chomping at the proverbial bit. Build a platform with a motor at each wheel (or only the front wheels or only the rear wheels) and you can make the car look like anything from a Porsche 911 to a Peterbuilt. Under the sheetmetal (or injection-molded plastic) they're all the same. Huge cost savings.
No issues with packaging either. VW's new ID looks like one of their dumbass SUVs but it doesn't have to. It could look like anything. Again, no engine to package. Motor at each wheel.
GM is one of the leaders in EV tech worldwide, by the way. In China, though, not the US. Low-cost, too, the kinds of EVs that would sell for less than $10K here.
