Got a little farther with this, probably a function of the brain stem and thalamus to use the senses we have and affect motor functions. The sense must be vibration, I always had the water running through the pipe when dowsing. Police procedural's commonly mention that cops get a pretty accurate feeling from outside of a house, if there is someone inside or not. Musicians comment on acutely feeling vibrations to improve their tone. My guess is that other senses come into play, to assist in finding water, but this case was primarily vibration.
