Surprising dowsing update

Yesterday I got my wife out to bang on the closest end of the pipe, about 125 feet from where I was trying to find it, while I listened to the ground with a stethoscope. I could hear it best right above the exact spot the copper rods crossed the first time. I dug deeper at that spot and found the pipe. I couldn't have been more surprised.

One thing that really helped with using sound, was that my wife was tapping out a discernible pattern, tapping a wrench against the PVC pipe.

I posted this with the original posts, and re-posted in hopes of hearing theories regarding how this could possibly work. The only wild theory I can come up with is that humans evolved with an innate ability to find water. I didn't try it, but my guess is that others have tried to correlate dowsing results with a magnetometer without success.

I first tried the rods with a running garden hose, only the rod in my right hand rotated, and it was a surprisingly pronounced response. I figured I was subconsciously controlling it. Then when trying to find the pipe, it was again only the right rod that rotated and it was as dramatic as the hose.

Any theories?
