My only advice is to find a hose bib or some place where you know the line is and dig down until you find out how deep and which way it goes. Then, find another known point and draw a straight line in between. You may be in the right spot, but not deep enough.
Luckily, we have an old house and did a lot of work at the beginning for landscape irrigation and whatnot and either found or broke most of the lines, so we know where most of them are now.
