I have to agree on a VAT. While I think it's a good thing as it will get tax money from the underground cash economy, it is somewhat regressive and the politicians wouldn't cut income taxes to offset the VAT revenue.
OTOH, the problem today with taxes is that even the middle class isn't paying any taxes. With these new child tax credits, you likely have to earn more than $75K before you pay a dime if you have a couple kids.
When I got out of college, I didn't make much, but I paid income taxes. We need to broaden the base, not just tell folks that the rich will pick up the tab. I believe that everyone should have some skin in the game. Otherwise, the lower income folks will just keep voting for free stuff and the politicians will continue to bride them and play the class warfare game.
