It's against the law here too, but not enforced unless you're doing something completely stupid. I'm in a heavily wooded suburb with houses spread out a bit (~1 acre lots) and I have a silenced PCP air pistol, so unless I'm hitting metal my neighbors never hear it. I shoot target practice in the back yard from time to time and haven't gotten a complaint. If I lived in a denser housing area I wouldn't do it. But I probably wouldn't have as much of a problem with squirrels either.
