The Squirrelinator

Squirrels are cute, but they're also pests, eating my ground cover, pulling the flowers off the hibiscus bush and eating them and making holes everywhere. We thought we had more gophers before we realized that it was the ground squirrels.

So I did some research and splurged on the Squirrelinator. Most of the best traps are killer traps and because they're cute, unlike gophers, I figured I'd give this a go.

After I received the trap, I scattered some mixed nuts in my chosen spot for a few days, a little in the morning and again near dusk to train them to find the nuts. When I saw a crow over there, I wasn't sure that my training would prove fruitful.

Anyway, today was the today to try it out. After coffee, I smoothed out the dirt for my trap and made a small hole at about the middle of the area to fill with a handful of nuts and then set the trap down and sprinkled some more nuts in the center through the wire and a few more at the two entrances on each side. Then, an important step, I found two heavy rocks to put on top of the trap so that it wouldn't move around.

By 2PM, I figured it was a bust and took a nap.

When I checked again at 5PM, bingo! I'd gotten two of them. Dang, now I needed to find my shoes and gloves and get the critters into the truck.

At a secret location several miles away, I put on my gloves and opened the doors and the morons only wanted to try to chew the wire in the corner of the trap. Hmmm, this wasn't going to be quite as easy as I thought. Finally, I turned the trap over and picked it up on one side to shake them around where they finally jumped or fell through the door on the top and ran like hell in the opposite direction.
