This is how it worked (from a slightly different perspective)
For most of my life I worked for large American global corporations (and was extremely grateful for the opportunity). These included Polaroid and Honeywell, both of whom had large footprint factories in the West/Centre of Scotland.
They were here because it was cheaper to build in Europe for the "overseas" market due to American labour costs and import duties. So, just economic common sense.
Many of us eventually lost our jobs when these factories, or individual product lines, were transferred to Chinese factories for the same reasons.
It's just the way it works. If you want significantly cheaper goods, you need to pay lower wages. You can only get so much from manufacturing efficiencies.
China is now losing out to Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines. Check your recently purchased trainers.
