I flew up to Minneapolis for Doc's 90th birthday "Big Band Birthday Bash at Orchestra Hall (which turned out be a really awesome concert!) in 2017. As he recounted his early days with the Charlie Barnet band (a "fun-loving" group of musicians), he said that he could see how alcohol could ruin him, and decided to stop drinking it. Then, right there in front of 2,000+ people, he said "I'm an alcoholic". Then he said, "after fifty years, I stopped counting".
