Some people are like that

I've known many people who have died because of alcohol and drugs. I stopped drinking coming up on 20 years in 2023. Started drinking in my early teens and I ended up as an occasional but always bad drinker who readily admitted alcoholism (and laughed about it). Shorty after a reunion with my birth mom when I was in my mid 40s, who I never really knew, I quickly grew to dislike alcohol and haven't drank (except for a taste here or there) for 18 years. And with all the messed up stuff I did because of alcohol abuse I honestly think I was better off than if I wouldn't have had it as an emotional crutch. In hindsight I was lucky alcohol didn't kill me but without it I think my life outlook and possibly my chances of survival would have been worse.

It's sad your friend couldn't break her ties with alcohol but the value of her extra time because of the liver transplant is priceless. It's great that she had it.

Thanks for sharing!
