This whole article does not take natural immunity into account in attaining herd immunity which is not what I'd call scientific.
The country's declining covid-19 case rates present an unrealistically optimistic perspective for half of the nation - the half that is still not vaccinated.
We've been told that herd immunity is achieved at roughly 70-80% immunity. Right now, we're told that about 41% in the US are fully vaccinated. One can guess that about half of the unvaccinated have immunity from being infected by COVID.
In addition, children have not been able to get vaccines and those under 18 are about 24% of the population.
So add it up:
41% vaccinated
12% natural immunity under 18 and very low risk with 50% having had COVID
17.5% natural immunity, 35% unvaccinated adults with 50% having had COVID
I get 70.5% immune, with another 12% (under 18) with low risk.
Basically, the science would dictate that those that have natural immunity don't need to be vaccinated. That's not to say that it may be a good idea; however, some data suggests that one should wait some time, months or more, after recovering from COVID before getting a vaccine. Also, I can't see any need to vaccinate children unless they have comorbidities.
Remember, these vaccines are still experimental, so I can surely see why those that have been infected, are young or have no underlying health risks may choose to not be part of the vaccine experiment.
