Mochill's mochi cupcakes

The latter half of the 90s was when I'd regularly meet audiophiles. At the same time, my friends graduated from college, and loved music, too. But they liked lite rock and dance music, genres the audiophiles "weren't allowed" to like or admit liking. My friends typically were not into alcohol, fashion, jewelry, and makeup. Instead, while going up and down California, they became foodies. We used to share food, drinks, and even utensils. Now that we're in a pandemic, we look back, and sort of get the heebie-jeebies, thinking about all that sharing, and "cross-contamination."

Even if they moved out of state, they remained foodies. My old friend Linder (as we've always called her) was/is back in the Bay Area, to visit her relatives. She wanted to try Mochill's cupcakes, so she came over to Oakland. We placed our order online, and then picked it up from the Oakland Food Hall.

Left-to-right, top-to-bottom: cookies n' cream, strawberry, peanut butter jelly; kinako powder, matcha, dark chocolate berry

Oops, just like old times, Linder and I shared the peanut butter jelly. After that, we had to stop ourselves, and make sure the others were cut first, before other people could share/eat them. The "cake" portion is on the drier side, which is not like mochi confections, or those found in dim sum. My wife (no, not Linder) says that the consistency of the mochi cupcake is reminiscent of Filipino cassava cake.

And yes, Linder had to get mochi donuts. Left-to-right, top-to-bottom: cinnamon sugar, mango, matcha; white choco berry, cinnamon sugar, taro. Because the mochi donuts pull apart in segments, these are conducive to sharing.

Although Mochill obviously are known for their donuts, would we get more of their mochi cupcakes? Yes.

As we audiophiles get older, it does seem more challenging, to visit each other. You may not like the girls' (they're now middle-aged moms) lite rock or dance music. But maybe you'd like mochi cupcakes and donuts. Regardless of vendor, go find some!
