the 2nd Amendment was written by James Madison as a concession to the Anti-Federalist reaction to the establishment of a standing army in peacetime during the first constitutional convention ... and that was done because state militias weren't prepared and adequate to repel the Brits
both made sense then ... now, not so much; it's more than being out gunned too, which is certainly true
the modern incarnation of the state militia is the National Guard that's supposedly under state's authority; but as those signing up to be weekend warriors found out during the Iraq adventure, they could essentially be conscripted by the Fed and shipped out wherever Uncle Sam needed cannon fodder ... so who is this 'standing army' you refer to and what orders do they follow? that's the REAL not so much
