RE: The Savage

"More than 80 percent of the old-growth is on Federal land, primarily National Forests. Old-growth occupied about half of the forest area when the first comprehensive forest surveys were made in the 1930s and 1940s. Less than 20 percent of the forest area is now old-growth".

Many, many unique species live in the top canopies of the old growth stands. As they are cut, these species continue to disappear. My sis-in-law held a Phd in biology; she and her colleagues used to winch their way 150-250' vertically to study the life forms there. This was as students. Sadly, after she completed her studies, she never returned, funds for studying those ecosystems just didn't exist in any quantity.
