RE: Native-plants: beautiful, easy-to-care-for, and good for your

Careful with those natives. They can find the local environment too inviting.

Only half kidding. In 2014 we hired a pro landscaper and completely re-did the yard. Our landscaper used a Texas native called horseherb (Calyptocarpus vialis) as a ground cover in one bed in the backyard. Now that stuff is EVERYWHERE. I mean EVERYWHERE. It's migrated to the neighbors and nearly completely covers the creek bank all up and down the length of it on the property behind us.

This from the Johnson Wildflower Center: "Depending on your point of view, Straggler Daisy or Horseherb is a pest or a welcome, shade-tolerant groundcover that tolerates moderate foot traffic." IMO, it's both.

It's probably a good thing on the creek bank as the grass that was planted there died from neglect years ago. At least it's green, helps prevent erosion, and practically thrives on neglect. On the other hand, it's a PITA keeping it out of my veggie beds. Anyway, "native" is not always best.
