local environment, i.e. soil; butterflies; bugs/insects; birds. The amount of water saved from watering a lawn (and prevenitng damage from insecticides, pesticides) is considerable, too. Our plan is to gradually replace as much grass as possible. In its second year, the garden has come into its own; the first, it was savaged by rabbits, necessitating a (cheap materials) mesh fence.
Already, we're seeing an increase in butterflies, bees (how many species are there, anyway!), and birds.
