Unexpected treasures in Baton Rouge, LA. Our wonderful country is

amazingly varied and full of under appreciated, under visited, and unfairly overlooked gems.
The Capitol building is an amazing Art Deco work, built by Gov. Huey Long who was shot to death (the bullet hole still visible) inside it. The statuary at the entrance is remarkable. Inside, the two legislative chambers are connected by a magnificent gallery that features a somewhat surprising set of murals: not exactly what one expects in an assembly of God-fearing politicians. Nearby, the LSU Art Museum was a bonus: surprisingly good, but small, collection of classic paintings, as well as some contemporary gems. The museum has a very large collection of an American Arts and Crafts ceramic company that I'd not heard of--- and what a find this was! Newcomb Pottery produced one-of-a-kind, hand-painted works. Bonus: the roof top sushi bar has excellent fare and knock-out views of the river.
