The flag-waving, constantly intoning "America is great!" brand of patriotism: I don't get it.

What is unique about this country? I love it because of its familiarity to me. Is it the greatest country on earth? Well, Covid certainly has shown that a significant number of Americans don't believe in science and other events have shown a significant number don't believe in representative democracy--- unless their guy wins.

Rome. Portugal.Spain. France. Belgium England. All were leading Western countries during their day. Their people still are around--- are they not still "the greatest?" What makes a citizenry "great," then?

This isn't meant as a criticism of American, per se, but rather of hubris. This is a fine country, but so are many, many others. The idea that we should be so puffed up as to force other countries to do this or that politically seems... ill-considered.
