You and Abe both are possibly genetically predisposed to your dislike of cilantro.
I never had the slightest aversion to it until I started growing it. Although I still love it and use at any excuse, when I'm out cutting it or otherwise handling it in the garden, I sometimes will get that whiff of soap smell you mentioned. It reminds me of the cheap, oil based liquid soap the school janitor used to put in the soap dispensers in the boys room when I was in grade-school. Funny how smells can be so vivid and trigger specific memories.
After I get it in the kitchen, rinsed, leaves picked from stems and chopped, all I get is that lovely, fresh perfume that attracts cilantro lovers.
But I do, I think, finally understand what you and Abe experience. It can smell like soap.
