Because most kinds of oil are less dense than water, most spilled oil floats on the water surface. It spreads out and is pushed across the water by wind and currents.
If it captured right away the oil dispersion will be less problematic and intrusive unto the nearby shorelines where the oil usually congregates and coalesce.
However, let's look at the science and integrity of the underwater pipeline construction. According to ANSI specifications, the pipe has to be a certain type of steel material that will withstand the pressure and drag coefficient due to undulation and will have an inner wall coating to minimize the effect of oxygen-induced oxidation and it will also have an external coating.
The pipeline in Line 5 had a diameter of 20" with a capacity of almost 540,000 barrels of oil per day with an external coating thickness of approximately 1" to protect the pipeline from harsh environments such as freezing, thawing, and ground heavings. With that kind of rigorous engineering design and specs, under normal operating conditions, the pipeline should last for a very long time for as long as it's being monitored and maintained regularly.
