Instead of washing clothes or keeping your food frozen, it gets you from one place to another.
And that's all it needs to do. Anything more than that is want, not need.
"Want" is created in peoples minds by advertising. If you only market one kind of car, that's what people are going to want.That's exactly what the car makers are doing. They use advertising to create demand for high profit vehicles. When, as a result, nobody buys the low-profit vehicles (and in fact, there actually is a market for the vehicles the car makers claim no one buys. Ford sold about as many Fusions per year as it did Explorers, despite a complete lack of advertising for the Fusion. But the Fusion, which was an excellent car, is gone. The Explorer is still around. Guess which one is more profitable), the manufacturers can close the factories and lay off workers, cut overhead, make more money.
When the car makers marketed small efficient vehicles as aggressively as they market SUVs today, they sold well. In fact, they sold better than SUVs do.
