"Bigger is better" was the marketing philosophy of the Big Three for decades.
Building small cars costs about the same as building big cars, but in the US, you can make more profit selling big cars. Americans won't accept the idea of a premium small car. We've been brainwashed to think the bigger vehicle is always better.
"Brainwashing" is probably too strong when only a light rinse would suffice.
