I bought a Rolex Explorer

Back when they were about $3k. I hit the 60-year mark, was retired (but shouldn't have been), and still alive after living a life that never gave good odds on it. A girlfriend said I should celebrate.

She was right, and I still do. I got one of those screw-consequences things going in my head, and said I was going to buy the watch advertised as the one Sir Ed Hillary took up Everest. I thought that was cool. It was also about the cheapest Rolex. My friend said go for it and chipped in half of the cost of my 60-retired-birthday gift. I tried to pay her back, but all she said was stay alive. OK, will work on that.

All mechanical; its a nice piece, worn daily. A keepsake that is pretty accurate, within 15-20 sec/week. No cardio/pulse/phone calls/memos/etc; no calendar. Just time, as long as I can figure am or pm. Sometimes its a challenge ...

Its the same as owning a Leica I think. Machine lust. I also have an electric Swiss Army watch with a titanium-finish case. I like it better, and is more accurate. It has a calendar. Go figure. I can't.
