Example:
In Germany there were two companies producing white pigment (titanium dioxide), one near the North Sea coast and one along the river Rhine. During the production/refinement of titanium dioxide a lot of dilute sulphuric acid was a byproduct.
This was happily pumped into the river or dumped in the North Sea by tanker.
Then the government banned the practice of pumping it into the Rhine.
Of course the company lobbied strongly against the ban claiming that it would bankrupt them, jobs would be lost etc ie theusual stuff companies say but the ban went ahead.
Within 6 months the company had developed a method which did not produce any waste acid!
