They are on while I am working - stupid time difference.The last three years I have watched all the best picture nominees and my choice has yet to win. I think I have agreed with the best picture winner twice since 1990.
This year's winner was Nomadland which I ranked 8th out of 8. So umm I was WAAAAAY off on this one lol.
I ranked them as follows (out of 5 stars)
8) Nomadland ***
7) Mank ***
6) Judas and the Black Messiah ***
5) Promising Young Woman *** 1/2
4) Trial of the Chicago 7 *** 1/2
3) The Father ****
2) Minari ****
1) Sound of Metal ****
As an audiophile, I suppose Sound of Metal had more of a personal emotional impact on me which tipped in its favor. Rhiz Ahmed was outstanding in the lead role as a drummer who has lost his hearing. It's a love tringle between him, a woman, and his music.It's also the only film I would consider as rewatchable entertainment out of the lot.
Also, there were no films with "big screen" sensibilities like a grand Lawrence of Arabia spectacular. Choosing Mank for cinematography because it's in Black and White is almost as lazy as Nomadland even being nominated for it. Picturesque shots is not cinematography. None of the films felt big with weeping shots of large crowds. They are all somewhat small arthouse kind of films. Nothing with the technical bravado of a 1917 or Ford V Ferrari from last year for example.
