there were lots of homes and crops burned during the war of the states too
since armies run on their stomachs and no one's sure of the duration of conflict it's strategic to remove food and any shelter from the elements
too bad about the economy and 'civilians' [reclassified as collateral damage for palatability]
of course, in all out war there are no civilians, just future conscripts and present support ... that's why no one wins wars they just survive them
