. . . you don't really know what you'll encounter out in the boonies (oops - I mean in "flyover country"!), and it might be better to be safe than sorry if help isn't close by. I'm not proposing gun ownership as a hard and fast rule under these circumstances, but it might be worth serious consideration at the very least.
