If I lived in a high crime area I'd ponder getting a gun. But I've never lived in a high crime area and hence have never felt a need to own a gun. For most people I know.....ditto. I can't imagine myself going to pick up some groceries at a local store and thinking to myself "I better take a gun. Some lunatic or terrorist might show up and I'll shoot him/her and save lives - possibly my own."
