The idea of local sorting is but a fond memory to the older carriers. Almost all letter and flat mail is sorted in a regional center. The KC sorting center goes past Atchison all the way up to St Joe, MO. It sorts mail for Lawrence, KS and Topeka as well. Very little letter mail is actually sorted by hand anymore because the USPS uses optical character scanners and has been since before I retired more than ten years ago. Carriers and rural route delivery people will manually sort some mail but they're usually going out the door with presorted mail trays an hour after they clock in. Most of the routes I carried required between 2 1/2-3 hours of "putting up" my mail. I was also responsible for handling both hold mail and forwarding mail for as many as 650 delivery points. Those chores can be done through automation these days. The job is different from my days of being a "mealy mouthed malcontent" Union carrier.
